French luxury goods group Christan Dior became the latest western company to apologize to China, over using a map that didn’t include Taiwan as part of the second-largest economy.
China claims sovereignty over Taiwan, which rules itself.
According to reports from Reuters and the BBC, Dior used a map of China excluding Taiwan during a recruitment presentation at a university. Dior apologized and said it “always respects and upholds the one China principle, strictly safeguards China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and treasures the feelings of the Chinese people.”
Asia excluding Japan represented 31% of Dior’s controlling shareholder LVMH’s MC, +0.49% revenue during the first nine months of the year.
Dior is the latest fashion company to be embroiled in controversy over China, as Capri Holdings’ CPRI, +2.62% Versace apologized over a T-shirt that didn’t say Hong Kong was part of China, with TPR, -0.08% Coach apologizing after a T-shift listed Taiwan as a country.
The NBA became embroiled in controversy after an executive for the Houston Rockets tweeted support for Hong Kong. The league’s reaction also angered American fans, including members of the U.S. Congress, for not backing free speech.
